The impact of Tsunami in Tuticorin District has been a heavy loss and extensive property damage, and a loss of a livelihood for fisher folk. After the first period of immediate relief the Diocese has been involved in the Rehabilitation Programme: this kind of programme is implemented for a medium-long term to allow a community to resume its own balance.

There are different issues of intervention: livelihood restoration, housing reconstruction, psycho-socio care, health, capacity building, skill development for youth, awarness programs, alternative livelihood trainings etc….

In opposition to the relief works the effects of the rehabilitation are not visible in the immediate period but they need time to be analysable.

The activities to be implemented by the communities must be thought and organized in an integrated manner to prevent negative effects from one sector to another one. The starting point of a good rehabilitation programme is a right selection of beneficiaries; this is why for our programme we request the participation of each community we are present in.
