Immediately after the deadly tsunami that hit the coastal villages under the Tuticorin diocesan areas on 26th December 04, the Tuticorin Multi-purpose Social Service Society (TMSSS) pressed into service all its staff members working in various projects. The tsunami waves caused evacuation of over 10,000 families to safer places from 35 villages Even if several NGOs responded with immediate relief along with government, role played by TMSSS was very crucial as it has larger presence all through the coastal belt of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts.
After the first period of relief work, to respond in the best way as possible to the request of people and to implement the rehabilitation process, TMSSS established the Tsunami Rehabilitation Office. The Office started its task on 11 April 2005.
The programme covers two Civil District:
1. Thoothukudi 2. Tirunelveli
In both the districts there are 28 villages directly affected , 20 in Thoothukudi district and 8 in Tirunelveli district . The 28 villages consist of 39 parishes and 3 Sub-stations which are listed below. In that there are 7 Parishes are Heavily affected as Hi-lighted |
